Hesed is a word so rich in depth that no single English translation can fully contain it. In many traditions, it is described as lovingkindness, compassion, mercy, steadfast commitment, or covenantal faithfulness. Rather than pointing to a single idea, hesed depicts a love that acts—faithfully, generously, and without limit. However, the beauty of hesed is not confined to a single tradition. Many faiths speak of a Divine love that is patient, compassionate, and steadfast. When we look at hesed through an interfaith lens, we see a universal calling: to mirror that same generous love in our relationships with one another.
