Why are we moved to compassion for people who has experienced a tragedy? I am inspired by Bart Ehrman’s, Love Thy Stranger. Ehrman a convert from Christianity to Atheism/Agnostic, frames Jesus’ command to “love the stranger” as a moral revolution that reshaped Western ethics. He contrasts this with the ancient world, where generosity was limited to kin, tribe, or civic peers. Jesus’ teaching introduced a new, universal obligation to care for those outside one’s circle—an idea that would take centuries to take root. Sunday is a great day to join us and bring a friend.
